Since Mother’s day was yesterday, I wanted to write about this article I found from Den of Geek. Com writer, Alana Abbott. In this article, Abbott compiles a list of amazing and powerful mom’s who have captured our hearts from the world of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The women featured on this list are wonderful mother’s through their courage to fight for their children even in the face of death! Or to join in their children’s fight to save the world. So let’s celebrate these heroic women and salute them as the fantastic mother’s they are.
Laura Lightfoot (Onward)
First, we start with Laura Lightfoot; if you do not know who she is, I suggest you find out quickly! Laura is the single mom of two adventurous boys from the Disney movie Onward, after her husband’s death. The film centers around two boys on a journey to spend one more magical day with their late father by using a visitation spell. But we are not here to talk about the boys only! We are here to discuss how much of a badass Laura Lightfoot is. This awesome mom does not hesitate to run into danger when her sons go missing on their wild adventure from using the visitation spell to resurrect their father. She goes into full momma bear mode armed with a sword against a ferocious dragon that threatens to kill her sons! How many badasses do you know will battle a dragon? Laura Lightfoot, we salute you! Queen Ramonda (Black Panther)
Being Queen mother of the Black Panther T’Challa and Shuri is a tremendous undertaking. Still, this magnificent woman manages to pull it off with style. In the comics, she is not only the mother of one black panther but two! Both T’Challa and Shuri possess the power of the Black Panther in Nnedi Okorafor’s version of the comic series. In this series, not only is Romonda, the queen mother of the Black Panther, but she also forms a secret task force of Wakandan women to protect the sacred land from evil intruders. These intruders want to steal the country’s vibranium and the heart-shaped herb . It would be interesting if Nnedi Okorafor’s version of the Black Panther were to be incorporated into the next film. Molly Weasley (Harry Potter Series)
Throughout the Harry Potter series, Molly Weasley is the mother Harry Potter always wanted in his life. She is supportive of her husband and his work for the Ministry of Magic, along with their three sons and daughter going off to Hogwarts to hone their wizardry skills. Mrs. Weasley rules the household with an iron fist. On the outside, she seems like a typical housewife, but is so much more under the surface. In the final installments of the Harry Potter films and books, Mrs. Weasley unleashes hell by using her powers as a witch to fight Voldermont’s henchmen as they try to attack her children and destroy Hogwarts Academy. One thing is for sure, Ms. Weasley is a force to be reckoned with as she lays down the law not only in her household but against the dark forces of magic. Jane Van Dyne (The Wasp/ Ant-man)
Jane Van Dyne is the original Wasp from the comic book series Ant-man and the Wasp. She is the mother of Hope Pym and the beloved wife of Hank Pym (Original Ant-man). Jane and Hank worked alongside each other as Ant-man and the Wasp fighting crime and saving the world against the forces of evil. When one mission goes array resulting in Jane being trapped in the Quantum Realm, Hank and his daughter Hope spends years trying to find her. While Jane is in the Quantum Realm, she adapts to the environment and gains new strength and powers. Jane manages to escape the realm exhibiting her unique abilities and maintaining her motherly instinct by referring to her daughter as little Jellybean and nurturing her the best way she can. Sally Jackson (Percy Jackson Series)
Sally Jackson is the mother of Percy Jackson who is the son of the Geek god Poseidon. Being the mom of a half-mortal/ demigod is no easy feat. Still, she manages to love him unconditionally, all the while protecting him from treacherous monsters who seek to kill her son. She marries a repulsive man named Gabe mostly because his unique stench keeps the monsters from finding Percy. Gabe is not only disgusting but abusive as well. Sally Jackson is a courageous woman who overcame an abusive marriage, protected her son in the face of danger, and fights side by side with him in saving the world from Greek gods and monsters. Joyce Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Joyce Summers dealt with a lot raising her teenage daughter Buffy Summers. She had to deal with their tumultuous relationship as mother and daughter, her sneaking off in the middle of the night, unsavory relationships with men, and odd behavior. Little did she know all these elements were part of Buffy Summers growing pains and saving the world as a Vampire Slayer, of course. Once the truth came out about Buffy, her mother did all she could to adjust to the new normal of her daughter’s life. She made sandwiches for her slaying activities, allow Buffy’s friend’s mortals and vampires alike in her home, and tried to be the best mother she could be for Buffy and her sister Dawn, who is significant to Buffy saving the world. Muneeba Khan ( Ms. Marvel Comic Series)
If you haven’t heard of Muneeba Khan, I need you to pick up the new Ms. Marvel series immediately. Muneeba is the mother of Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) from the 2015 series. Kamala Khan takes the reins from Carol Danvers, who is now Captain Marvel! Confusing I know but roll with it. Also, Kamala Khan is the first Muslim American character in a comic book series. Unlike Joyce Summers, Muneeba figures out who her daughter is early on through a mother’s intuition and some “investigative” work. Once she finds out her daughter is Ms. Marvel, she doesn’t hesitate to support her newfound powers secretly until Kalama finds out. This goes to show you that our moms know what we are up to even when we try to hide it, but they remain supportive from behind the scenes.
